Georges Saint-Pierre Profile

Georges St-Pierre
Georges ‘Rush’ Saint-Pierre was born in Saint-Isidore, Quebec, Canada in 1981. He started his martial arts training at a young age. At age 7 Saint-Pierre took up Kyokushin Karate, mostly to deal with bullies at school who would steal his clothes and his money. His karate teacher was a huge influence on his life. By the time Georges was 12, he was a black belt and unfortunately his karate teacher passed away. Muay Thai became his next martial art form and at age 16 he took up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. By age 18 he was also training in wrestling and boxing.

GSP, as he is often referred to, is the current Welterweight Champion of the UFC and is ranked as on of the top ‘pound for pound’ fighters by several MMA sources. He was named the Canadian Athlete of the Year in 2008.

The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale Delivers

June 21, 2009

Tonight’s The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale boasted to have some of the most exciting fights since the series first aired.

All I have to do is quote Joe Rogan as the Guida-Sanchez fight came to a close: “God damn!”

While not in reference to the fighters trying to earn their stripes and prove the deserve a spot in the talent-rich UFC Lightweight and Welterweight divisions, there was a pair of exciting fights that were worthy, in my opinion, of full blown UFC cards.

True to form, Chris “Lights Out” Lytle drew Kevin Burns into a toe-to-toe throwdown, with each of them getting rocked early in the first two rounds. Lytle really looked to be in trouble in the first round after being on the receiving end of the first of three low kicks throughout the fight. Burns seized the opportunity and turned up the heat, almost knocking Lights Out’s lights out. Lytle (now 38-16-4) kept his veteran composure and made it to the end of the round. The second and third rounds were all Lytle, with him rocking Burns early in the second and slicing Burns open with a hard overhand right early in the third. From here, Lytle is landing hard blows square to Burns face, almost promising a knockout, but “the Fire” was able to burn through to the end. Judges officially ruled the apparent fight of the night as 29-28 Lytle. One could only hope that the two fights following could live up to this one.

The Main Event threw two of the most charismatic UFC Lightweights together for what would be one of the most exciting fights this year. “The Carpenter” was looking to chop down another TUF competitor in Diego Sanchez. After a staredown that ranks up there with “Rampage”, Clay Guida and Diego Sanchez came out of the blocks swinging yard. In his second appearance at 155, Diego looked to razor-sharp, knocking the long-haired, Guida goofy with uppercuts in the first 30 seconds of the fight and dropped him with a wicked head-kick late in the round.

Guida’s chin proved to be a formidable opponent for Sanchez’s improved striking and he recovered his composure, surviving the barrage thrown at him by the “Nightmare”. Guida came into the second round with as much energy as he did in the first, changing up his strategy and taking Sanchez down and working his ground-and-pound. Sanchez was not phased and delivered punishing elbow strikes to the top of Guida’s skull, eventually slicing him open. The round finished with Guida in Sanchez’s guard.

Round 3 began with a brief firefight and then a scramble where Guida wound up on top. The groundwork from this point was impressive. Sanchez worked for various submissions, concentrating on a kimura that he could never quite get locked in due to the lubricating qualities of Guida’s blood. He also worked for an armbar with the same result. The third round ended in a stalemate, with speculation that the fight could be called a draw. The judges ruled the fight of the night a split decision in favor of Sanchez.

Notable mentions:

The UK’s James Wilks dominating performance over Demarques Johnson, the US’ sole fighter left in the competition. Wilks punished Johnson with striking that far surpassed any of the other fighters he had fought so far. Wilks ended the fight in the first round with a takedown from behind and working for the rear choke. Wilks eventually pinned Johnson’s right arm with his right leg, securing the choke and forcing him to tap.

The lightweight fight between Ross Pearson and Andre Winner was fought mostly in the clinch. Pearson eventually wore Winner down over three rounds, and producing a pace that Clay Guida would be proud of. Pearson landed well-timed punches and knees and eventually left Winner on one knee with a cut below his left eye to take the decision and the UFC contract.

Joe “Daddy” Stevenson performed a bit better in his fight against Nate Diaz, than he did in previous outing against Diego Sanchez. Stevenson muscled through a pair of guillotine attempts from Diaz to earn the 29-28 decision and snapped a 2 loss streak.

Looking ahead, the winner of the B.J. Penn and Kenny Florian should be ready for a renewed Diego Sanchez. One can only assumed that Sanchez will continue to improve his striking and ferocity and provide a solid threat to whoever emerges with the belt in August.

Overall, a nice round of fights, and a good warm-up for one the most exciting MMA cards to date at UFC 100.

UFC 100 : Brock Lesner vs. Frank Miir

June 15, 2009

UFC 100 is quickly approaching. I am curious what you think about this fight. Brock is a powerhouse, while Fank has already beaten this newcomer once with a submission. Has Bock learned enough take down defense to keep Frank off of him or will this be a repeat of the last fight?
